Here are the issues I was running into, when I updated to KUbuntu intrepid's KDE4 packages (KDE 4.1.3). Some issues might already be fixed for KDE 4.2 (I have marked those, where others told me that KDE 4.2 fixes them), but since I can't test this, I won't remove those items yet .

• The systray wastes lot of space (two rows would be possible, only one is shown)
• Vertical taskbar is unusable
• Kasbar missing
• The plasma config for a panel feels so different from the rest of KDE
• There is no mixer applet for plasma
• In Plasma, a vertical and a horizontal panel overlap!
• How can I remove the „Favorites“ from the (classical) start menu?
• Alt+F2 does not detect server.kainhofer.com:81 as http, but tries to open it as a local file!!!
• The „Geräteüberwachung“ (device monitoring) plasmoid only shows „Volume (ext3)“ and a mounted icon. This not very helpful for USB disks with multiple partitions, as there is simply no way to distinguish the partitions!
• In the dictionary plasmoid, I cannot enter anything into the lineedit, as the focus always stays with the current window and thus all keyboard input will end up there!
• Often trying to start konqueror by entering a URL in the Alt+F2 runner will start konqueror with the URL „http:“ (yes, no URL there!) or with an old URL from previous calls!
• I can't change (fix) the font of the clock (I love my panel to be ~70 pixel high, so that three rows in the taskbar are visible!), so it takes a lot of horizontal space (120 pixel!!!) for no purpose.

• Konqueror (webbrowser) profile with multiple tabs is completely messed up (one tab is shown, but the mouse behaves as if it were on some other tab)!!!!!!!! The first tab also shows all the scrollbars of the other tabs! Nasty WORKAROUND: cycle through all tabs once, then all tabs behave normal again.
• Konqueror menu is too high with smaller font due to the progress icon
• Middle-clicking on a file in Konqueror (to open it in a new tab) gives me the error message that a directory is expected. Correctly, it should simply open the file in an embedded view!
• There is no action any more to convert music files using soundkonverter!
• In the tree view, there is no column any more showing the target of a symlink!
• The tooltips for files in the tree view start way beyond the left edge of the screen, so you can't see what is in the tooltip); In KDE 4.2, no tooltip is shown any more at all!
• In tree view, clicking on the icon in front of the file name should normally jsut select the file (like Ctrl+click in KDE3). However, every now and then it will simply open the file, which is very annoying when you have manually selected 20 files and then suddenly a file is opened, clearing your selection!
• If the cursor is inside a text input box or text edit, then pressing Ctrl+A does not select all the contents of the box, but rather the whole page!

• #184621: The resource view in KOrganizer is no longer alphabetically sorted, but apparently random
• #181981: In Korganizer's edit dialog, when you press „Cancel“, you are always asked whether you want to close the dialog, even if you have not changed anything!
• #184622: KOrganizer's F/B export is broken: It always adds tons (currently 66) entries like FREEBUSY:20090217T105239Z/20090617T105239Z at the beginning of the F/B data. These span the whole F/B interval and thus make the F/B totally useless, since all the time will be marked busy.
• #184624: The category selection dialog does not have the category list focussed, so I first have to use Tab, Tab, Tab before I can select a category using the keyboard. In KDE 3.5 that listbox got the focus automatically.
• #184625: KOrganizer does not have the n-up printing tab in the printing dialog
• #184628: Recurring events were treated in KDE 3.5 as if the DTSTART was given in local time (even though they were written out in UTC). In KDE 4 they use the TZ given for the DTSTART, so the DTSTART MUST be converted to the local time zone on loading (can be done using a compat rule).
• #184636: KOrganizer's all-day pane does not save its height, so on each start, the all-day agenda view will take ~25% of the whole height!
• #184642: In KOrganizer, if I try to dissociate all future instances of a recurring event, only the current instance is dissociated
• #184643: Moving all future occurrences of a recurring event cannot be properly undone
• #184662: Recurring events in UTC show incorrect UTC offset for summer/winter time periods.
  • In KOrganizer, if I dissociate an instance of an event that is given in UTC time, then the dissociated event will be shifted to the correct time rather than stay at its old (wrong) time.
• #184669: KOrganizer's TZ is Europe/Vienna. If I now create an event in UTC in December 24, 23:00 UTC, lasting 1 hours, it will be displayed on Dec 24, 0:00-02:00 Europe/Vienna, as well as on Dec 25, 0:00-2:00 Europe/Vienna!!!
• #184670: Copy&paste of events in KOrganizer's agenda view messes timezones up

• #184673: Each time I log out, Kaddressbook forgets my IMAP resource and I have to manually recreate it!

• Incoming accounts in KMail were completely deleted and not imported on update (from kde 3.5 to kde 4.1.3)
• KAddressbook shows multiple phone numbers in a scrollable area instead of decreasing the padding (which is too large anyway!)
• KMail's dimap check uses 100% CPU!
• KAddressbook crashes if you have the embedded contact editor enabled and you change the name
• KOrganizer leaves 1-2 pixel space between subsequent events. That's misleading
• Editor dialog in KOrganizer and KAddressBook wastes so much space and thus looks overly complex

• The Kate folding marker are very hard to read (how far does a group go?) with deeply nested structures like XML files!
• Kate crashes incredibly often
• Trying to open a remote text file (e.g. http://musicxml.org/dtds/note.mod) in Kate's file open dialog gives an error message that the location cannot be listed. Opening the file works fine after that, though.
• Kate's replace function only works with an embedded panel, where keyboard shortcuts do NOT work (e.g. Alt+a will not do „replace all“, but rather activate the „Ansicht“ menu! So you have to use the mouse for this. Unfortunately, you'll also have to click back into the text to be able to continue typing! And once you close the panel, the whole replacement string history will be gone!
• When doing a search & replace in Kate, there is no feedback how many (and if any) replacements have been done. This is particularly annoying if you are working with regexps and you are not sure if you got the regexp correct for the replacement!
• Kate sessions were renamed to some random name (the internal ID instead of the proper name) when updating to KDE4.1.3 (from KDE 3.5)
• As soon as I do one search (which displays the embedded search pane), the minimum width of the window increases to ~1000 pixel and there is no way to make this smaller again.

• The system:<html></html>media/ ioslave seems to have vanished, I didn't find any easy way to list all devices and mount/unmount them as needed! * Booklet printing is missing * Printing: Changing orientation is much harder than before * No more sub-printers (e.g. gutenprint/booklet, gutenprint/one-sided, etc.) * The notification config dialogs no longer have a „Disable all sounds“ button * The printing dialog no longer remembers the settings from the previous printout. It even ignores the printer settings for duplex printing!!!!! * How can i use my bluetooth headset with Phonon (kscd, amarok, etc.)??? In kde 3.5 I simply set up the bluetooth device in .asoundrc and could use this in the amarok config. In KDE4 I can't seem to find any option in KSCD… * All save dialogs loose the entered file name as soon as you click on the scrollbar of the file file! * In all file dialogs, you cannot fix the size of the icons in the sidebar! Even worse, they change size (and thus position) when you resize the dialog!) * In all save dialogs, as soon as you select a file name from autocompletion, the dialog closes and wants to overwrite the file. You don't have a chance to select a file name and modify it slightly before saving… * Running KDE4 application over an ssh-tunnel is DEAD-slow (apps running on a dual-core machine!, while KDE3 apps feel about five times as fast running on an eeePC over an ssh-tunnel) * If you have a local session running, and you ssh in from another machine, all unique aplications will not be able to connect to the dbus by default!) ===== Theming ===== * Icon colors are missing (KMail is white, kate is white, konqueror use a „T“ (the font icon), KOrganizer is white, Konsole is gray etc.). In KDE3, I mainly identified apps by their icon color (Kmail was orange, Konqueror was blue, Konsole deep black, Kile a blue circle, KMLDonkey green, etc.) * „Clear input field“ uses the „Edit“ icon ?!?!?!? * FIXED: The Menu uses the „Back“ icon instead of a proper start menu icon. SOLUTION: Use the Oxygen icons. All other themes don't have proper naming ===== KNetworkManager ===== * KNetworkManager does not connect to any WLAN network! * KNetworkManager does not seem to detect any network * KNetworkManager is awkward to use (no longer shows all available APs, instead one needs several clicks to connect to a new network (which doesn't work then, either)); Shouldn't connecting to a wlan network be as painless as possible? Currently, knetworkmanager gives the impression that it is really complicated to connect to a free wlan hotspot (You have to first „configure“ a connection for eth0/eth1 – how are users supposed to know which is the wireless interface anyway? – and then you can connect!) ===== Various Applications ===== * KSudoku no longer displays all possible fields for a number when you press shift → Much harder to work with! * Kscd does not allow uploading CDDB entries any more, so I have not way to add a new CD to the CDDB!!! * How can I share my KDE4 desktop via VNC? * In ark I can no longer open a file in the archive with a different application (e.g. I want to preview an *.rtf file with OpenOffice; instead arks shows me the raw text, which I can't understand anyway!!!) ====== PROS of KDE4 ====== * The desktop looks very stylish, which is useful if you want to show off you computer to friends (but typically gets in your way when you have to do real office work) * KMail dimap mail check is incredibly fast * network manager seems to support UMTS connections * Scrolling of <div> with overflow:auto now works in konqueror * The quick access plasmoid rocks
